China’s First Insurance Scheme for Children Aged 3-15

There are about 360 million children in China. Less than half are covered by commercial medical insurance system or social welfare. Those who are covered cannot afford expensive treatments for disease such as leukaemia. CCTF set up China Children Insurance Foundation (CCIF) to provide insurance protection for children aged 3 to 15 targeting children with critical illness. Children in China living in relatively impoverished circumstances are particularly vulnerable. For example, some 40,000 new leukaemia cases occur in China each year with about half of these occurring amongst children. More than 70% of these children cannot be treated properly because of family poverty.

How it works

For every donation of RMB 20 Yuan (£2 GBP), annual insurance cover of RMB 100,000 Yuan (£10,000 GBP) is provided for a child. Insurance covers four types of critical illness/injury common to children in China - leukaemia, acute renal failure (uraemia), severe burns and double/single permanent total blindness. Donors can contribute to a general fund (any amount) or specify a target beneficiary group (must be groups of children aged 3-15, £5,000 GBP minimum). The Foundation provides for the purchase of special insurance products as well as education and training for risk management control and injury prevention.
